Ingenious Ways Designers Are Making Vegan Leather | PETA

"Gloves, handbags, wallets, watches, you name it: There’s a laundry list of accessories that have traditionally been made from leather—yes, the unfortunate kind that was originally the skin of an animal.

Although there aren’t products to show for it yet, the vegan leather industry just took a very exciting turn.

Piñatex is a textile that was recently developed from pineapple leaves. The transformation into usable vegan leather occurs as the leaves are degummed and made into a luxe mesh material that feels much like felt.

Aesthetics aside, pineapple leather is super-sustainable and does not involve the use of any additional water, pesticides, or fertilizer beyond what is needed to cultivate pineapples for consumption." - PETA
